About EdgeStack

Overview

EdgeStack is a stack of technologies that commissions, collects and controls field devices over slow, costly or spotty communications in such a way that ensures delivery, keeps costs low and provides your organization statistically relevant data. Pre-integrated edge devices allow for easy Machine to Cloud, and Cloud to Enterprise integrations through an open API.

Data, Data, Data

Organizations are using data collected to drive optimizations and decisions. The most successful are utilizing algorithms to tune their devices, platforms, organizations, etc. based on data. The potential is exciting, especially considering the amount of data industries have already gathered from their devices.

However, we are finding that just because a lot of data has been collected, that doesn't mean it is immediately helpful. Unfortunately, industries are finding that because of the way data has been collected over the last few decades, data is "dirty" and is not usable by machine learning or artificial intelligence methods. EdgeStack focuses on providing organizations with clean data.

The EdgeStack Vision

We anticipate the lack of communications. We anticipate the slow connections. We anticipate public networks to drive costs down. We anticipate the requirement for secure, reliable, statistically relevant, accessible data. EdgeStack is a comprehensive solution that leverages the latest technology to take advantage of the massive connectivity opportunities available today while architecting for the reality of communications.

Our EdgeBroker, EdgeServer, EdgeGateway and EdgeCloud are optimally designed to be:

  1. Connected
  2. Scalable
  3. Secure
  4. Accessible
  5. Dependable

This provides your organization immedately usable data even if the communications to the field disappear for hours, days or weeks. The end goal is to provide detailed insights to inform decision making at all levels in order to prevent issues, avoid unnecessary repairs or replacements, and minimize downtime. This will make your organization more productive without hiring an army of data scientists to clean the data collected.

History of EdgeStack

We built EdgeStack as a response to growing needs/problems in the industry:

  1. Data that is ready to consume and analyze
  2. Older technologies implemented across the industry with minimal talent and aging talent
  3. Technologies built to handle remote communications, high costs, and disruptions
  4. Data access across department and organizations without "poking holes" in a data center or application
  5. Security of remotely connected devices, even over public networks
  6. True data ownership

The founders of EdgeStack have decades of experience in SCADA systems. Using current embedded and cloud technologies, EdgeStack provides companies data availability at levels not previously available.

Current scan rates only provide enough information to identify problems, not resolve them. Communications currently used are expensive and spotty. To make matters worse, data is difficult to access, and in some cases, very costly. Organizations are concerned with security when deploying data collection solutions, yet the current architecture is deployed using older technologies understood by an aging population of technologists.

In response, we built a system to handle the commissioning, collection, control, and delivery of remote field devices, utilizing the newest technologies. Our software controls access and communicates with remote devices, collects data, and manages communications so that no matter what the realities of the field are, your data is collected and ready to use and share.

A Message from the Founder

I believe software development is a recipe of creativity, science, form, function, and business. I love working in this industry; meeting people with different problems; helping them by creating just the right balance of these ingredients; finishing and devlivering a product that is useful and successful for the end customer

EdgeStack was born out of my experiences implementing remotely controlled devices over cellular communications that were spotty and expensive. The limitations I faced created a number of interesting computer science problems.

The business problem of gathering "good" data that is useful with the ability to easily share the data once collected still existed. The collected data seemed to always have "holes" in it and would get dropped into an application that required additional integration.

EdgeStack was built to provide you a pre-integrated set of technologies that know how to communicate with each other. We have created novel approaches to common issues related to problems like tag definition, uniform collected data that is “pre-scrubbed” ready for analytics, handling disconnected or spotty communications, commissioning new locations, open access to collected data by authorized organizations using open standards, and providing secure communications everywhere.

The EdgeStack technology was built to be deployed by:

  1. Equipment manufacturers that make devices with collectable data to provide their customers secure access and control to the connected device
  2. Large companies that have 100,000’s of remote locations with devices they need to collect and control securely
  3. Smaller companies that have remote locations that would like to securely collect and control but don’t have the SCADA personnel (or can’t keep them)
  4. Those that have many IoT devices they want to securely manage access to these devices

You’ll notice the repeated mention of terms like: "good", "clean", "analytically read", "statistically relevant". This is the core of why we built EdgeStack: secure, statistically relevant data, independent of deployment or communications.

Thank you for your consideration in our range of products, and I look forward to working with all of you.

Thank you,
Hank Haines
